The verdict
StrongBoth open the door to Membership Rewards, but the Gold is a different weight class — up to 60,000 points versus 10,000, 2x on gas and groceries on top of travel, and real travel insurance, against a $250 fee. The Green is free, but its 2x is narrow — hotels and car rentals booked through Amex Travel only; everything else, flights included, earns 1x. Take the Green purely as a no-cost way into the MR ecosystem (Aeroplan transfers included); anyone who spends enough on food and travel to use the Gold's categories will out-earn its fee many times over.
