The big-number illusion
PC Optimum is the program where the headline point figures are the most misleading in Canada — not because the program is dishonest, but because its points are denominated in tenths of a cent. A balance that reads 45,000 points is $45, not a windfall. Aeroplan and Scene+ points are whole-cent currencies, so their totals and their dollar values are in the same ballpark; PC Optimum totals are always ten times larger than the dollars behind them. Once you translate points to dollars, the program is easy to read: a fixed 0.1¢, everywhere, always.
