Check every account in the household

Expiry is per member, not per family. The accounts most at risk are the ones nobody logs in to: a parent who stopped flying, a teenager’s account from one family trip, a partner who never got an Aeroplan card. If any of them hold a meaningful balance, put their dates through the checker too, or pool them with Family Sharing so one redemption keeps everyone active.

Frequently asked questions

Do Aeroplan points expire?

Yes. Points expire when an account goes 18 months without earning, redeeming, transferring, converting or donating points. Air Canada paused expiry through November 29, 2026; from November 30, 2026 the normal policy applies again, so accounts that have been inactive for 18 months or more lose their whole balance that day.

What counts as activity?

Any transaction that moves points in or out of the account: earning on a flight, a credit card, the Aeroplan eStore or a retail partner; redeeming for anything; transferring points to another member; converting points in from another program; or donating points. Logging in and checking your balance does not count.

How do I find my exact expiry date?

Log in to Aeroplan, open the Activity tab and scroll to your points inactivity date. That is Air Canada's own figure and it overrides any estimate. Air Canada also says it emails members up to 60 days before their points expire.

Who is exempt from Aeroplan points expiry?

Primary cardholders on a TD, CIBC or American Express Aeroplan credit card, for as long as the card is open and in good standing, and members with Aeroplan Elite Status. Additional cardholders are not exempt.

Can I get expired Aeroplan points back?

Within six months of expiry, yes: fly Air Canada (the trip itself must fall inside the six months), get an Aeroplan credit card, claim missing points for an earlier hotel stay, car rental or flight, or buy the points back for a fee. Air Canada doesn't publish the fee, so ask before paying.

Rules checked 2026-10-05 against Air Canada’s Aeroplan inactivity-policy page and its notice that points expiry is paused until November 30, 2026. Aeroplan’s General Terms and Conditions are the full policy. Dollar values use The Points Standard Index mark of 1.9¢ per point.
