Value by redemption type
“What are Aeroplan points worth?” has no single answer: it depends almost entirely on how you redeem. Our headline 1.9¢ is what an informed, ordinary traveller should expect: someone who checks partner availability and books a few weeks out, not an award-booking hobbyist.
| Redemption | Realistic value per point |
|---|---|
| Business class on partner airlines | 2.3–2.8¢ |
| Economy partner awards (zone pricing) | 1.5–2.2¢ |
| Air Canada economy (dynamic pricing) | 1.0–1.5¢ |
| Air Canada seat sales | 0.8–1.2¢ |
| Merchandise and gift cards | 0.6–0.8¢ |
| Hotels via the Aeroplan portal | ≤0.8¢ |
The split comes down to pricing models. Partner awards use fixed distance-zone charts, so when cash fares spike your per-point value soars. Air Canada’s own flights are dynamically priced against the cash fare, which anchors them near 1.0–1.5¢. Merchandise, gift cards, and portal hotel bookings are consistently the worst use of the currency.
What moves this valuation
We re-mark the Index monthly, and off-cycle when the facts change. The last big move came from Air Canada’s June 1, 2026 award-chart increase, which raised roughly 85% of partner-chart bands. Transatlantic business went from 70,000 to 75,000 points one-way and Pacific business from 87,500 to 102,500, and the increase took our mark from 2.1¢ to 1.9¢ on July 11. What would move it again: further chart changes, dynamic pricing spreading to partner awards, how often Amex runs transfer bonuses to Aeroplan, and changes to cardholder preferred pricing.
When Aeroplan is the wrong program
If you don’t fly Air Canada or its Star Alliance partners, don’t build an Aeroplan balance: a currency you can’t redeem is worth less to you than a plainer one you can. Two alternatives worth valuing on their own terms are Amex Membership Rewards, which moves into Aeroplan 1:1 only when you have a trip, and cash back, which has no chart to learn and no expiry rule.
How much are 10,000 to 100,000 points worth?
| Points balance | Floor (1.0¢) | Standard value (1.9¢) | Strong redemption (2.8¢+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | $100 | $190 | $280+ |
| 25,000 | $250 | $475 | $700+ |
| 50,000 | $500 | $950 | $1,400+ |
| 85,000 | $850 | $1,615 | $2,380+ |
| 100,000 | $1,000 | $1,900 | $2,800+ |
The best cards for earning Aeroplan points
Two routes, and the right one depends on how often you fly Air Canada. Direct co-brand cards earn Aeroplan on every purchase and add airline perks like free checked bags. Flexible-points cards earn Amex Membership Rewards that transfer to Aeroplan 1:1, usually faster earning, and your points keep their optionality until you book. Frequently asked questions
How much are Aeroplan points worth?
The Points Standard values Aeroplan points at 1.9 cents each (CAD, 2026-10-01 index) for an informed redemption, with an easy floor of about 1.0 cent per point on any sensible flight booking. Partner business-class awards can reach 2.3–2.8 cents, a band trimmed by Air Canada's June 2026 award-chart increases.
How much is 50,000 Aeroplan points worth?
About $950 at our Standard value of 1.9¢ per point. As a floor, 50,000 points are always worth roughly $500 toward flights; redeemed well on partner business class, they can reach about $1,400.
What is 1 Aeroplan point worth in dollars?
One Aeroplan point is worth about $0.019, that is, 1.9 cents, on our current index. The realistic range runs from about 0.6¢ (merchandise) to 2.8¢ (premium-cabin partner awards).
Do Aeroplan points expire?
Yes, from November 30, 2026: Air Canada's 18-month inactivity rule returns that day, and an account with no earning or redeeming in the previous 18 months loses its whole balance. Primary holders of TD, CIBC and American Express Aeroplan cards, and Aeroplan Elite Status members, are exempt. Your points inactivity date is shown under the Activity tab when you log in.
Why are partner awards worth more than Air Canada flights?
Partner airlines price in fixed distance-based zones, so the points price stays flat even when cash fares are high. Air Canada's own flights use dynamic pricing that tracks the cash fare, anchoring value near 1.0–1.5 cents per point.
